It will be added

When we ask God for something we normally think of how we can better our own situation and tend to be selfish without even knowing it. This is not the case with Solomon.

Solomon is the son of King David and his life account can be found in 1 Kings chapter 1-11 in the Old Testament. He became king after his father died of old age. God promised David that his son will be able to build Him a temple and allow Israel to be united, thus the golden age of Israel was born.

Solomon isn't perfect, but the way he responded to God is what I call, "wisdomfull". Even before God asked him what he needs, I believe God has already given Solomon the ability to have wisdom in his decision-making. He didn't ask for riches, he didn't ask for long life, for the safety or security of his kingdom, but instead, he asked for wisdom.

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” 1 Kings 3:5
Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” 1 Kings 3:9

Solomon asked for discernment. It was wisdom that Solomon was set apart from other Kings of his time.

And in verse 10 this is what is written,

It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. 1 Kings 3:10

In the book of James, we are reminded that we can always ask God for wisdom. That is always available to us. Wisdom, knowing, and discerning between good and evil comes from God alone, and we have access to it! Do you tap on this resource?

What amazed me is how God still gave Solomon everything that he didn't ask. The key to God's heart I believe is to please Him.

When we please Him, he will add to us anything that He knows we need, even if we don't ask about it.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you search for wisdom apart from God? Do you sometimes tempted to lean on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6) instead of God?

  • Where do you need wisdom right now in your life? Have you prayed about it? Stop and pray right now.
