Servanthood or Superstardom?

A common misconception among those who want to have a leadership role over a group of people is that it comes with power, glory, privileges, and honor. Anyone who wants to be considered a leader must first be a good servant.

Leaders are the ones who are supposed to show everyone the real meaning of being a servant. The problem roots in thinking that a leader is above those whom he leads, celebrities are found in some churches today not true servants. There are those in church leadership that want to exercise their authority, but only a few want to use a towel and basin to wash feet.

Openness is the first act of servanthood. For someone to effectively serve, they need a clear understanding of the cultural background of the people group they were called to serve. Duane Elmer defined openness as, “the ability to welcome people into your presence and make them feel safe.” It is an ability therefore anyone can learn and develop it.

It begins with God. God can see a person without ethnicity, nationality, and social status. Jesus initiated the relationship between man and God through His sacrificial act on the cross. We are all accepted because of the unselfish act of Jesus.

Humility is the key to servanthood. We should be humble enough to serve others like what Jesus did for everyone, forgetting His status as God and taking the form of a servant (Philippians 4:7).

A true leader is a true servant. Jesus Christ exemplified that in His life. In the life of Christ and the lives of Christians, being a leader should be first and foremost a servant. Those who desire to be great in God’s kingdom must be the servant of all.

Challenge: Let's out-serve each other during our rehearsals, event, services, and gatherings.

Read: 2 Corinthians 4:5, Philippians 2:5-8
